The r21 simfile making guide: Help needed

Postby Insane Steve on Sun May 04, 2008 11:06 pm

In this thread I submitted a guide (well, two parts of it at least) for making simfiles. This is all wel and good, but there's so much more information that can be added to these pages. I am asking for help in making this guide better (and for part III, actually finishing it). Ideas, pictures, improvements of any kind, all help is welcome.

Here's the guides, for easy download.

Part I (Starter's Guide)
Part II (Intermediate Guide)
Part III (Advanced Guide) (incomplete)

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer for this project.

I'll probably try and help in the near future. This guide's a great idea and I'd love to see Part III get completed.

How do I add graphics to a simfile? I've got a video and I want it to start play about 0.5 seconds after the chart begin. Any help appriciated :)

I believe you can hit b in edit mode, which will allow you to add a movie (which will start at the beat you're on). The movie needs to be in the folder with the music and .sm file. Also, I think some formats won't work with ITG (like WMV - but I think AVIs work - go to media-convert.com if you need to convert from a bad format to a good one).

Actually, I don't have a lot about gx/videos in this guide, advice about how to do things like this would be an excellent addition.

I've said it before Steve and I'll say it again: you NEED to get this guide up on the forum. That was you can EASILY add pics, videos, make changes, link people to it, etc. If you need help putting it up and formatting, not only am I willing to help, but I'm sure there's plenty of others as well.

I'm going to try this guide to make a song I really like.

Edit: Just remembered that the USB slots were busted so I'll try the guides if/when they get fixed...

What does "step rhetoric" mean at the end of the third guide? That is the unfinished part.

Step-Rhetoric - Using arrow patterns and gimmicks in order to accent and/or enhance the experience of playing the song. Usually hard to explain to beginners, but can be understood as thus: if you have an experience in life, you have two choices to record it: 1) write down exactly what happened, or 2) express it creatively (ie: in a poem/song). Either way, the experience will get recorded, but the difference is when it is presented to others. Writing down exactly what happened may come across as bland and boring, whereas the poem/song can have many layers of meaning. The same can be applied to stepping a song. When you do it, you have two choices: 1) step everything exactly, beat for beat, or 2) step it in a more creative way (ie: with gimmicks, interesting arrow patterns, etc).
As for the actual definition, step-rhetoric usually refers to the usage of arrow patterns, gimmicks, mines, freezes, rolls, etc to make the stepchart go along with the music even better, and enhance the player's experience.

What a beautiful definition for step rhetoric. I don't think anyone could have described it better.
