The point he's making though is that we don't need another system, at all. His theory on this whole thing is based off the idea that the majority of stepmakers have come to the point where they don't need idolized stepmen on pedestals to look up to because they can look to themselves or to their equal peers for tips/advice on how to write charts.

No system at all?
I'm a bit worried on how that would end up actually.

It wouldn't be that different from how it is now, even at the worst case scenario. By "no system" I don't mean something like getting rid of admins or anything like that, I mean getting rid of just the concept of staff steppers. As the OP states pretty well, only a handful of us even post things that much at all anymore; so we make a change from posting in our own forums to the public forums with everyone else. Big whoop.

Admittedly, I would miss having a nice organized sticky to keep my autismal organization desires in check, but it's hardly worth grieving over.

Sounds like a good plan; this community is pretty much community moderated anyway.

Or create a section for members who make a lot of charts.

An open ended one is no a good idea due to the lack of organizer.
Unless of course there is a master list of all the songs with their respective difficulties, etc. :)

But wouldn't that indirectly promote the feeling of "stepmania supremacy" that this whole idea is trying to take down? While I can kind of understand what you mean, I can't see this turning into anything but just yet another simfile pool for the (active) staff and those non-staff mentioned earlier that produce quality charts consistently.

Slayer³ wrote:An open ended one is no a good idea due to the lack of organizer.

Isn't this what IF and Packs already is though? That system generally works and really doesn't need that much tweaking (I kind of wish there was some automated way to weed out moronic opening posts but that's besides the point).

Slayer³ wrote:Unless of course there is a master list of all the songs with their respective difficulties, etc. :)

I'm not exactly sure what group you're talking about here, but Packs generally gets this done quite fine for large amounts of files, same for IF on the smaller scale. As for a "master list", the closest thing I can think of is TEEX's pack index, which is pretty well maintained. If you're worried about information being lost on the current staff sections(?), we could simply move them as-is into retired -- although now that I'm thinking about this, I'm kind of confused as to exactly where the newly benched staff should post their future files if staff was removed: their old stickies (for convenience/organization), or IF/Packs?

this is kinda complicated for me

No but seriously I get that, I guess I didn't phrase it exactly the way I wanted to; I meant that while staff was/is still a thing, retired staffers generally just posted any later files they'd make in the retired sims subforum: my question was more if we were going to continue that tradition or drop it. I'd personally be okay with dropping it, but it'd be weird if say for instance I, as a retired staff, post a file in IF, but (not personal or anything, just using this as an example) Insane Steve posts a file in his old retired subforum. The point I'm trying to make is that I just want this theoretical shift to be consistent across the board, is all.

What I mean is a master file section showing songs/difficulties for each song in one spot.

For example: Say all new files are posted in the IF.
We have a list looking like this, that also links to the download of the file or pack or files:
http://www.r21freak.com/darkluke/stompexceed/

Easy to read.
Easy to see what pack the songs are from, difficultly, and links to each.

That's what I meant.

If there is just a thread for each song and say I don't check the boards for a month, I could miss some awesome charts.
But if they are also in one list I'd know. (person with a date added or month added too)

Seems like this is going to be a big hell of php coding to add support for multiple user add/modify items to the list... I've never done anything that deals with usernames/passwords in any programming work I've ever done...

Also, looking back at the original purpose of "staff" step makers during the very first days of r21freak.com was to simply showcase different charting styles by several people, when everything else were just 16th streamfests at extremely fast tempos. And the individual files section were sorted into 3 different subforums by difficulty: easy / hard / ridicious (didn't remember the exact difficulties for each range), to make it more friendly for players to search for stepfiles suitable for their abilities.

Seriously? I was here before the site even went public and I really don't remember this ever being the case. We didn't even have subforums back in the day.

Ok, there's no way everyone here agrees with this. If you disagree, please, speak up. I'd really like to hear it, and I mean that in the most sincere, non-demeaning way possible.

I'm against it because the staff positions sort of give me a goal to achieve, to help push myself and keep at it. I honestly don't know how to explain it further, but that's the most straightforward answer I can give.
