Button number IDs for the Cobalt Flux pad

Postby rikame on Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:56 pm

NEW QUESTION!

I'm soldering the connections back, but all the wires are loose and I have no idea which pin connects to which wire. Could anybody with a cobalt flux check to see which pad sensor leads to which number (What joystick button is up, down, ect. according to ITG/Stepmania)?

er, accidentally posted this as a reply at first

CLIFFNOTES AT BOTTOM

I've had it for about a year now, and it worked fine until about a month ago. Basically the right and down arrows weren't working. I opened up stepmania's sensor testing screen and found that it wasn't detecting just those two buttons, but the other 9 buttons worked just fine. I pressed the female connector dongle on the front of the pad around and got it to work then, but it kept on going back to that problem. There is nothing visibly wrong with the connector other than that I'm not sure that it should be moving around. I've cleaned it, re-installed drivers (well, my laptop needed formatting in a whole separate disaster, so that should have fixed the problem were it an issue with the drivers). The problem has gotten worse though. I've had no issues with the right button, but the down button quits if I play anything harder than a 9 (as in, after I move it around it can handle MAX 300 for about 20 seconds at most and then die) I've tested the pins on the cable that runs to the control box, and they're all intact. I switched the ends of the cable around and had the exact same issue, so I know that the problem is in the internal wiring. I checked all of the forums, ect. and found nothing useful. I now have pad with all the screws unscrewed and panels flipped over. I vacuumed all of the dust from the crevices and I have a soldering gun and a multimeter ready. I need to get to the inner wiring but I can't figure out how to get there short of ripping the base metal, which is essentially a giant sheet of metal that is pretty firmly connected to the pad (and lies under the Velcro pads, which doesn't at all help). The screws on the side go absolutely no where. Help? :(

CLIFFS:

-Year old CF
-Down arrow seems to be shorting out. It's not the cable, control box, or computer. It's either the wiring in the pad or the wiring/inner pin in the front-centered dongle. Moving said dongle sometimes fixes the problems for a minute or less.
-Have no idea how to get in there without taking off parts that I have no idea how to put back on.
-Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post detailed instructions on how you got to the inner wiring, in case someone in the future has the same problem.

As for which wire is which button, it changed a bit between control box versions. Here are the button numbers as reported by SM5's Test Input screen. I hope this helps. Post whatever you do so future people with the same problem can know how to fix it.

Red Octane control box (October 2007 is when I got it, I'm not sure how long CF shipped with them for)

I know my up was button one, and I got it in 2011, so it must be the second setup.

And I shall post instructions when and if I actually fix it, since that is a good idea. I just need to find a way to resolder the internlet female vga port (and figure out which button is the ground) and I will be sure to post instructions :3

Thanks so much :D
