Problem with my banner and bg...

Postby Valor on Wed Feb 02, 2011 6:13 pm

I made a banner and background for my new stepfile, and in ITG2PC, they won't show up when I play the song. I saved them both as .png and made sure the .sm points to both the banner and background and they still don't work. Anybody know what the problem is?

EDIT: Becuase of this, I'm not sure if they will load on r21 either...

I have no experience with ITG2PC, but I've heard plenty of bad reviews (translation: it sucks). You might have better luck with SM 3.95 or OpenITG.

Not sure if ITG2PC creates a cache like StepMania does for banners and songs, but if it does, your issue could just be stemming from a bad cache. If that's the case, just delete your cache folder to have the program create a fresh cache when it starts up.

As for r21: If you're talking about having your song's art show up when you play the song via USB drive, don't bother. r21 (and r23 for that matter) simply does not support such a feature.

I've been using ITG2PC since '07, this is actually the first problem I've had with it. :?
You might be thinking of mdawgs ITGPC, cause that version had a huge amount of bugs from what I heard...

Well since ITGPC is based off of SM 3.95 I would think it would, so no harm in trying that out.

EDIT: Looked, and no cache folder found anywhere in my ITG directory.

I already knew this. I was talking about if someone hacks the machine and adds my stepfile, but come to think of it, I don't know why someone would put the first file I've made in 2 years on a machine, so that really doesn't matter as an issue to me anymore. :)

Thanks for the help.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. Must have been that version that I've heard all the bad things about. Like I said, I've never even touched either version to know any better. 8)

In the case of hacking your file onto a machine, the cache definitely comes into play there. That's gonna be entirely dependent on whoever actually adds your file onto the machine. When one adds custom songs (and courses) to a machine, one also copies StepMania's cache folder to the cabinet's hard drive as well. Essentially, one has all of their custom files set up in StepMania exactly as they are to be set up on the machine. So when StepMania boots up and creates its cache, you can use that exact cache on the ITG cabinet as well. Without copying that cache folder, none of the custom content would show up on the cabinet anyway.

So assuming that the cache is created without a hitch, your banner would show up fine on an ITG cabinet. Errors can and do happen in the caching process, leading to missing songs, missing steps or missing artwork. In those cases, one just has to recreate the cache and try again.

I've found the solution and I have no clue how it fixes it but....
All I have to do is move my stepfile from the folder I created it in into a different folder. Weird huh? :?

It's exactly as mute said, all you probably had to do was clear your cache folder, moving to another folder essentially does the same thing because you're adding to the cache rather than editing a piece of it.

With my version of openitg for example if I update a stepchart and go to test it, the old steps still appear until I remove the cache and let it load all the way up again (which is why I only use it for 1 song at a time).

Also because I'm too lazy to clear the cache I usually just change the folder name on every test, usually a bunch of random letters just to be quick about it.
