The NEW OFFICIAL Music/Albums Discussion Thread

Postby Psychotik on Mon Sep 20, 2010 12:09 am

We have a music discussion thread, but that thread is sorta dead. This one's for newly released or upcoming tracks/albums for you guys to discuss, review or hype on. Hopefully we'll keep this thread alive. I'll start it out.

I just finished listening to Venetian Snares' new album My So-Called Life. Classic Vsnares. I guess it's somewhat reminiscent to Detrimentalist, but still keeps a unique "feeling", like all of his other albums. Not his best, but still top-notch breakcore. The problem with this album, IMO, is that the songs don't really stand out and leave some impression on me as much of his better work. "Ultraviolent Junglist" and "Goodbye9/Hello10" were probably my favourite from this album. "Hajnal 2" seemed interesting but disappointed me a little, though I didn't expect it to be better than the original. And of course, the samples he uses in "Who Wants Cake?" and "Welfare Wednesday" are awesome.
:excellent:

You know, this is going to be goddamn BIG.
I'm going to preorder this.
And you're going to listen to previews and share the awesomeness.

If you don't know who's Danny Byrd, check the track here (and yes you can use this cut but AFAIK it was already stepped for ITG lol).

For Today - Breaker
This is probably by far my favorite album of the three. Their three released singles before the album came out were welcomed with positive reception. Most of the people i know were greatly anticipating this album. As you get into the first three songs of the album it really packs a metal punch in your face. Its hard, breakdowns, band chants, its just awesome. The only really downfall of the album is it all really starts to sound the same after awhile. The entrance into a breakdown is marked by the same cymbal clash in a few songs. To many band chants. etc.
My favorites from the album have to be the first three singles released. Devastator, Seraphim, The Advocate.

:excellent:

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns.
Ive already given some insight on what i think of this album in the thread it was given.
We all knew linkin park was heading in a different direction when minutes to midnight came out. They admitted that this album was going to be even more groundbreaking. Which it is, this isnt your typical nu-metal Linkin Park. Which alas is disappointing to older fans. BUT! There are some great gems within this album (Robot Boy, The Catalyst, Blackout are my favorites), but it also seems like a lot of was just experiments with what they could do. I personally praise the album despite not liking many of its songs, it doesnt really fit into the genre of music that i usually like to listen to, but i try to be open. This album is something new, something fresh from linkin park. Throwout your stereotypes of LP and give the album a shot without assuming its bad.

Underworld by Scribble

This song is in the genre of Drum n Bass. In the beginning of this song, it reminds me of the beginning of Plasticworld, then it goes into an epic piano part. Then all you hear is "And it's okay" over and over again, as if the song was consoling you. In my honest opinion, this song is a good song to relax to when times get rough (:

I listen to albums on a weekly, if not daily basis.

Today i gave Renards Free EP a shot "Intensive Care Unit EP: extended and remastered"
Its just up on his bandcamp.
For starters I havent really listened to a lot of Renards music or his various aliases music outside of the Destination series. This album is just really hyphy, jumpy, fast paced (most of the time). Which im sure most of his "Renard" albums are, he told me he creates all of his aliases to define his music to a different genre. A couple songs caught my attention (Intensive Care Unit, Silverboxer, Terminal) but it wasnt anything that blew me out of my seat, nor did i even keep the album. I dont have much to compare it to, so get it while its free and check it out for yourself.

:great:

Just here to post some clips/songs by Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO): a synth pop group from Japan during the late 70's - early 90's consisting of...
Haruomi Hosono (bass)
Yukihiro Takahashi (drums and vocals)
Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards)

This live version is a LOT better sounding than the one on the album (self-titled "Yellow Magic Orchestra"). The light show is retro-classic. 8)

Behind the Mask is my absolute favorite song by them, and it later got covered by Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson.

Though they had split up sometime ago, they're back together as of 2007 under the name HASYMO; their style is very much like Sketch Show, unsurprisingly since it basically consists of the same personnel.

But yeah, as for old-school YMO, both the self-titled album and "Solid State Survivor" are the two I would definitely go for first if you're looking to explore more of their stuff.

Wooo, I'm so late. My So-Called Life is pretty good; I think it's especially fun for those who've followed Funk up to this point, as he constantly makes allusions to older tracks and styles on the LP. Rave Digger was also good, but got old fast after a party-filled weekend. He's just the Calvin Harris of drum & bass, that guy - catchy tunes inspired by the rave days of yore. Speaking of Calvin, his latest was almost exactly like Rave Digger, from its ambiance to its party mentality to its emphasis on having a good time. As a great nightlife aficionado once said: fuck mixing, let's dance. For more '80s/'90s party-scene nostalgia check out One Foot in the Rave from Shitmat and the superior Where Were U In 92 by Zomby. You Hospital heads should be pretty stoked for the new Brookes Brothers album, whenever the hell that's gonna drop. Oh, and the Tron OST was vastly disappointing. Let's all fight about it.

But enough electronic music. Been bumping some WHAM! (most notably Last Christmas on repeat for days at a time) and soon I was led into George Michael's tremendous non-WHAM! discography. Damn that guy is prolific. Faith is the only album I can as of yet suggest; a lot of it's pretentious crap, but if you do get Faith check out "Father Figure," easily one of the creepiest singles I've heard this year. The new Vampire Weekend (Contra) and Arcade Fire (The Suburbs) albums were good, or at least much better than MGMT's 2010 effort, so don't expect the indie pop movement to die off any time soon. Getting really into Deftones; I've had Around the Fur since 1999, and White Pony forced me into the rest of their work. Saturday Night Wrist and Diamond Eyes are both great, though very different from the other two - much more clean-cut, with less of that Nu-Metal shit they incomprehensibly tried on for their early records.

If you're not all "above" hip-hop, the new Curren$y - Pilot Talk II - was very satisfying, if not as mind-blowing as its predecessor. I recommend them both.
