Rockband Tournament?

Postby b4mV on Thu Aug 13, 2009 3:22 pm

Would anyone be interested?

I have written up a format. I need a place to hold this, but I have all of the equipment needed to run it.

Here is how it works:
You could have anywhere between 4 and 8 Teams.
Everybody must play on Hard/Expert
A Singer is NOT necessary. If you do not have a singer, It will be an Automatic 88% on Vocals.
If you have a singer and you get less than 88%, you will be bumped up to 88% regardless.
If you play on Hard, you get 5% deducted from your score.

If you had 4 teams, you would skip this qualifier.

For 5-8 Teams:

Each band would play 1 song as a qualifier.
The song would be announced day of the tournament.
The percentage each member gets is added up for the score.
Example:

Guitar Expert: 98%
Drums Expert: 99%
Bass Hard: 94% -5%
Absent Vocals: 88% =
Grand Total: 374

The top 4 bands would progress to the next round, the bottom bands are dropped.

The Main Event:

Each band chooses a song for everyone to play.
The band who goes 1st, 2nd etc. will be chosen randomly.
The bands will all play each of the chosen songs in any order they would like.
The scores are recorded for each song.

At the end after everyone is finnished, everything is tallied up.
First place for each song gets 3 points
Seconds place gets 2
Third place gets 1
Fourth place gets 0

If there is a tie, a song is chosen randomly. The song must be out of either the Nightmare or Impossible teir.

Any tweaking to these rules required?
Any idea on where I could hold this tournament?
That is not someone's house?

I know some people that would be down (we wouldn't do spectacularly though, I imagine) if we can compete online, as it's kind of a long drive.

Yeah, I'd love an online tournament. We've already got a full band. :)

I'm actually going to run a Rock Band tournament at my school, since I'm covering the Games section in yearbook and I have to create my own events in order to photograph them. XD Would it be possible to steal and modify your rules a li'l bit? The only thing really stopping me from running the darn thing already is that I have never been to/in a tournament so don't know much about seeders or brackets or however it works. :/

If you could get a hold of mwok or Jimbo, they can definitely help you out. It might help to get an estimate of how many teams (bands?) there would be. If anything, just try to make it as simple as possible.
Also, chances are that you know some of the people who would be participating, due to it being in your school, so don't just make the team pairings random. If you know that a couple of teams are more experienced than the others, then put them against each other. It would make the tournament harder for the experienced teams, and it would also better ensure that the not so experienced teams get to play longer.

Good example of a tournament bracket would be this: Image
Gotta love wikipedia.
Yea I'm not active anymore, nor am I updating the WPUNJ topic (no point), but if you wanna contact me, just hit me up on facebook. Search Alex J Rios and that should be me.

If it's within your school, odds are you won't have the fiercest competition and you could probably just run a single elimination tournament (especially considering that a double elimination Rock Band tournament would probably drag on for some time).

thankees! My school has only 60 people per grade level, so if I don't know someone, it would be quite easy to get introduced. I was also thinking of running a free play/training session at lunch for a full week beforehand for people who aren't experienced or don't own the game, so they can practice (but I wouldn't reveal the songs to be played until the actual tournament). I don't think I'm allowed to charge entrance fees or give out cash prizes, unless perhaps there is excess money funneled into a fundraiser. I need to check with my principal. :/

They're not gonna allow you to do anything with money, they'll say it's gambling and flat out deny you.
I wouldn't even suggest bringing it up, we had that problem with a SSBM tournament last year. haha

They probably won't let you charge an entry fee, but if you can get a sponsor I'm sure they'll let you give out prizes.
