Official Metal Music Discussion Thread

Postby MacGravel on Sat Jun 20, 2009 9:18 pm

In this thread we can discuss everything there is to discuss about Metal. Discuss your favorite bands, least favorite bands, upcoming concerts you're interested in, files/packs you're working on or anything else you can think of that involves Metal.

I'll kick this thread off.

I'm working on a Metal pack for TEEX (<33333).

I'm liking this thread already. :P

Simfilewise, I just got back into working White Pearl, Black Oceans. Syncing the full 8 minutes is tedious, but great progress is still being made.

I might go back to some of the old metal files I made baaaaack in the day and revamp them to their full potential.

==============================

Non-simfilewise, Stratovarius' new album, Polaris, just came out a couple of weeks ago. Although none of the songs contain Timo Tolkki's arpeggios (since he left the band to start his new project: Revolution Renaissance), their new guitarist Matthias is quite talented himself. I was planning on reviewing each of the tracks, so maybe I'll do that later. Off the bat I can tell you that is in fact the amazing stuff you would expect from them. ;)

Dream Theater's album: Black Clouds, Silver Linings, also just came out recently. I've only heard A Rite of Passage so far, and I liked it. Kanji666 got his copy, and as a DT fan himself, he approves.

There are no specifications exactly when on their site. They've just started studio work this month, so I guess their estimated release date depends on how quickly they make progress. I'm sure they also have to budget their time between both the album and touring.

I haven't even finished one file for your pack, TEEX. I'm such a lazy bum, hahaha.

That's quite alright, bro. If it takes you half a decade, I'll be waiting patiently. ;)

Now that this has been bumped, have some metal.

Not quite as beast, but still one of my favorite metal-guitar related videos :D

The notes in that section are neither 12ths at 180 bpm nor 16ths at 180 bpm, but they are a lot lot closer to 16ths at 180 bpm than 12ths.

I remember seeing that video about 2 years ago; I still think it's an awesome duel. They're both fantastic guitarists. :D

Speaking of which, Jani Liimatainen, Timo Kotipelto (singer for Stratovarius) and Mikko Härkin (ex-Sonata Arctica keyboardist) are together in a new band called Cain's Offering. Their preview tracks sound amazing so far. Their first album will be released in September.

WOW. I had no idea. Thanks for the update :D I thought Jani was still in the armed forces or something.

Jani was supposed to, but I think he refused and was jailed for a very brief time because of it. When he was let out, Tony called and asked if he wanted to rejoin the band, but he never got back to them, and that's why Elias is his replacement now. It's disappointing, but I'm glad to say I at least saw him live once before he left.

BUMP

Check out Unexpect.
Extreme Progressive Avante-garde metal.

Wiki wrote:...an amalgamation of different styles of music, including black metal, death metal, progressive metal, melodic heavy metal, European Classical music, opera, medieval music, jazz, electro, ambient, noise, gypsy music, and circus music.

These guys actually opened for Sonata Arctica when I went to go see them 2 years ago. Until I saw them, I had no idea who they were, but now I'm glad I do; it was such a kickass show. The only thing I wonder now is why I neglected to check out the rest of their stuff for so long.

They sound a lot different from your average band, and you might even say they're an acquired taste, but if you like them, I'd recommend checking out the rest of "In a Flesh Aquarium". The rest of that album is pretty solid.

=============================
In other news, Sonata Arctica came out with their new album "The Last Days of Grays" last October iirc. They've continued braching out from their old style, which I'm still slightly disappointed about that, though in retrospect, this album is a LOT better than Unia.
