Please enable unregistered guests to view stepfile forums

I think we should start letting unregistered guests to view stepfile forums (staff and members sections). I feel all of our files on this files needs more downloaders.

Not too many people are willing to register without what songs are available on our site - unregistered users are currently unable to even search the stepfile forums.

zenius-i-vanisher allows stepfile downloading without registering on their forums.

I'm pretty sure Scott just made it like that to get the number of members higher. It seems pretty useless, I agree with Dark Lunk. People should be able to download files without being forced to become a member. Alot of my friends are not members here but I would like to be able to link them to my files. Just giving them a mediafire link isn't quite the same as being able to link them to a thread with information about the file.

I would have dowloaded r21twins when it came out if there hadn't been that registration requirement. Not saying it would have made me join the site sooner or comment on the pack, but when I saw the thread on the groovestats forum I tried to download it but didn't feel like registering.
Just my half cent.

Didn't realise you need to register, totally agree with everyone else. Should be free to see and download without registering.

Yeah, if memory serves me right, all boards are actually set to private until you register. Seems kinda silly to me, and honestly it took me a while to motivate myself to get an account.

I suppose there could be other reasons the boards are set that way that I'm not thinking of, though. *shrug*

It's not all the boards. I believe the JY and maybe some others are open to everyone.

Doesn't really work though. Most people won't bother to register, thus, less people will enjoy the ecstasy some of these files induce. If people are interested in the files and want to post something, they can register. If not, too bad.

This is a good question and deserves discussion. If you want to believe that the forums are kept hidden from non-members solely to increase that number at the bottom of the index, by all means go ahead, but the real reason is to induce people to become part of the community before they even download.

r21freak was started as a place for people to post individual files, get good feedback, and constantly revise and repost. The site has come a long way since its founding, but I'm not sure if I want it to become a place where people just come to leech hordes of files and bandwidth and leave. Of course that is an extreme example, but I think that just having people register before downloading files is a good push in the direction of reviewing stuff and posting their own stuff.

Overall I just don't see what we would gain from opening the gates except more downtime. Though there is the rare counterexample, the people who are initially turned off from simply registering to get the files would most likely not contribute anything after downloading anyway.

Think of being able to download files before registering as the 'free samples'. Free samples make people realize that they like what you offer and stick around to buy more. Etc etc.

I'd say that pack is good publicity. If that's the free sample, it's a good one. In part because they can see the discussion about the files, while they were worked on, and afterwards.

Not possible, since people post links to files from sites all over the place - how is the site supposed to know when someone downloads a file that's not even -on- the site?

Maybe leave the pack sites available for download to guests?
