Concerning avatar size.

Postby Xynn on Sat Sep 05, 2009 3:03 pm

Why do the avatars on this site have to be so small at 90x90??

I just think it would be cool if we could have something more visible like 120x120 or something.
Unless there's some specific reason why they have to be kept small?

They are that small to prevent obnoxious avatars. You should represent yourself with your posts, not with huge screaming avatars. I can't stand how some forums look with ridiculous avatar sizes all over the place. I'd rather sacrifice some freedom of expression for an overall clean look.

I understand what you mean. Like how ITG freak's avatars are like 500x500... But I'm just saying that 90x90 is small to the point where half the avatars I like I can't put because resizing them that small makes it impossible to see what they are.
I suppose it's not that big a deal, but still; a few extra pixels wouldn't hurt anyone. :)

Well then you should get more artistic with your resizing. Rather than simply shrinking something to 90x90, which will look awful, crop it and shrink it creatively to get it to look good. Almost anything that looks good in bigger dimensions can still look good smaller; you just have to be artistic about it.

So untrue.

Seriously though, why 90x90? It's a forum for dance games, not for anything serious. 150x150 would be reasonable, and it wouldn't look or be obnoxious. Hell, I don't bother changing my avatar because the current size restriction is so small that it isn't worth the effort.

Hell, even bumping it up just ten more pixels would make a world of difference.

I'm gonna have to agree with everyone here, I didn't even bother with an avatar just because the size limit was so small..

While it's small, I make due.

Even though, it would be nice if my rotating avatars could work on this site.

Oh well

This has been brought up before, and it's never changed. Honestly, it may be a bit small, but in the end it's purely sssmsm's decision.
Basically,

I'm quite happy with the current size.
As far as I'm concerned, all of you who said you don't bother setting the avatar you really want, because of the size, are probably people that would set irritating avatars that would bug me. I avoid the stepmania.com forums in part because of the prevalence of large avatars and gigantic sig banners (like Derkomai's, which I have blocked). It's just a hassle to go blocking the sig/avatar of half the people on a site, and update the block every time they change it. This also goes for all you people that put any form of animation in your avatar. Blocked.
This way though, we can have a civilized flame war without me needing to go block your avatar image and leave your posts with no avatar at all when I see them.

I agree with what sssmsm said about how it's the content of your posts that matters, not your avatar.

Yea, I agree with sssmsm and Kyzentun. At first I was like "wtf 90", but I soon got creative and realized you can do a lot with that little amount of space.
Yea I'm not active anymore, nor am I updating the WPUNJ topic (no point), but if you wanna contact me, just hit me up on facebook. Search Alex J Rios and that should be me.

The smaller the avatar size and sig size, the better loading times are going to be.

Just make do with the current size. I've been on forums where they don't allow bigger than 50x50 avatars.

I really don't think the height/width matter so much, as sssmsm said. If the pic you want is too big, resize it or find a new one, simple.

Or there's people like me who suck at resizing things and get too lazy hence no avatar. :D

I would agree with this, 100x100 isn't that bad. Bemanistyle has that, and it looks just fine.
