Going to FRVI worth it?

Postby Dirkzy on Tue Feb 07, 2012 11:17 am

Here is my situation.

I saw the tournament and I initially wanted to go. But after thinking about it, that might be the wrong choice.

I started playing on pad in June. I have no accuracy and I know I will get crushed in a tournament setting (Im not planning on winning or anything). I can only pass 15s and I dont score well, so I see myself losing early. This would be an 8 hour drive to the tournament. I dont know very many players in my area and I would most likely be traveling by myself, unless one of my friends who doesnt play itg wants to accompany me. I am not going to meet up with itg players from the forums either.

So, why would I even go to this? Well, I have been wanting to go to a tournament and this is a big itg event (right?). I thought it would be neat to see some good players in person and there is no guarantee that there will be a FRVII next year.

Ultimately, I think that I should go to some smaller events and not attend FR. Thoughts?

Having the same problem with RIP IV. I'm too busy to train, and I haven't passed Summer Speedy Mix yet. I'd be destroyed in anything but the mods tournament so it's down to whether or not I want to hang with you guys. 8)

Well, there's nothing wrong with going to an event just to hang out and meet people, right?

Before I started playing Technika, I would go to the Kings of the Coast events just so I could hang out with people and probably meet some new ones along the the way.

If anything, it's more for the experience rather than the competition. The competition is just one aspect, the people you meet and hang out with are the ones that make most tournaments worth it anyway.

8 hours is a long, shitty drive by yourself. If you don't know anybody and you'd be driving all by yourself, I don't think it'd be worth it. If you can find anybody who wants to go with you, then I'd say go for it.

I don't stand a fleeting chance of winning FR VI, but I'm gonna go anyway. Like derkomai said a big reason is for the social aspect; getting to finally meet people like phil/matt/paul/etc.

RIP IV I still don't know because I haven't gotten final approval yet, but I think I stand a better chance. But again the main reason is to socialize with WinDEU, Kytsune, Captain Black and whoever else is going. If you don't know anybody that's gonna be there though, then it might not be worth it.

8 hours by yourself? Boo. See if you can pick people up on the way and have them chip in for gas money. Or bus to a city on the way and carpool with someone else.

It's a huge event with about 150+ people. It's definitely the tournament to attend. It's an international competition.

I've never had a fighting chance at any tourney I've gone to, but I enjoy meeting the people and just hanging out. It's all in fun. The closest I got to winning something was My Little Spooty and WinDEU Inf+1 :P

I'm not sure whether I'll go to FRVI - it's so much more competitive than anything I've been to so far, but it's not horribly far away and the sheer size and history of it makes it unique. RIP IV, while much farther away for me, is also more casual, and unique in terms of content (SIDE TOURNAMENTS! SIDE TOURNAMENTS!) And the people are cool, so that one's a done deal~

EDIT: derp

Well think about it this way. You're driving 8 hours to a tournament you know you're going to lose, and there's others that are flying halfway across the world knowing they're going to lose. Your situations not as bad as some others it seems.

It's not even about the competition. I can't stress that enough. If you're not Matt Magdon, Aoreo, Chris Chike, Paul, Mad Matt or anyone in that group, you're not going to win. If you want to compete and see how far you go, that's awesome, but this tournament is more about a huge gathering of ITG players throughout the world. I just want everyone to come together and celebrate a game that is community driven and still thriving!

fasho. I wish I could go mostly just to party the whole time and maybe play a little ITG for the first time in like a year.

8 hours alone wouldn't make it worth it. That would be like me driving to 8otb.

I hardly know anyone there, but it's only a 3 hour drive for me, so I'll be going. It's definitely a nice atmosphere at the very least and it's interesting to watch, especially knowing that this game is on its last breath.
