Bumping to post the review I wrote for 65daysofstatic's latest album, Silent Running, on rateyourmusic.

65daysofstatic - Silent Running

I love 65daysofstatic. They were my introduction to post-rock and made me discover other great post-rock bands. One Time for All Time is still one of the greatest albums ever, in my opinion. But enough with the past, let's talk about the present. Many good folks seem to be upset about the path the band has been taking, going away from their traditional mathy post-rock and experimenting with different sounds. But the thing, that's what usually happens with bands. You can't always expect them to stick to one particular sound. Sooner or later, they will get bored and start experimenting. That's what they did with We Were Exploding Anyway, but the result wasn't that satisfactory, even for me. And now, we have Silent Running.

This album is basically a soundtrack turned into an album due to popular demand. It really does sound like a soundtrack at times, but that is kind of expected. Some tracks start with an idea but don't really go anywhere with and just kind of end. Soundtracks don't need to be like that. It's a little disappointing too because they seemed like interesting ideas and could have been amazing if they followed up on them. Rantaloupe is a perfect example. There's a great build up near the end but then it just ends. Space Theme and The Announcement also suffers from Sudden Ending Syndrome. On a completely different note, Finale is a very weird song. It starts out as normal like any other track on this album as suddenly turns into a dance-like beat. It just felt, well, weird. It's the only way I can describe it. It was sort of an anti-climactic ending.

Enough with the qualms, it's making me look like I didn't like the album, because I did. I really liked the electronic noises and effects. I thought they set up a really great spacey mood. It really felt like they were going for atmosphere more than anything. The Scattered Disk was definitely the most ambitious track, electronically, with glitches and IDM-esque sounds in the intro of the track. I generally thought the instrumentation was great through out the album. The piano I think is a really great instrument for space themed songs and it works really well on this album. Burial Scene is a great piano-oriented track. Although some tracks did seem to stick to one idea without really following it, quite a few of them did and built up into something magnificent.

This album certainly is a step up from We Were Exploding Anyway in my eyes, but doesn't really compare to The Fall of Math or One Time for All Time. It features solid instrumentation while still experimenting with new sounds. Those who enjoy the more mathy side of 65DoS may not like this that much. It certainly was an ambitious project for the band and I'm looking forward to what they bring to the table with whatever their new project will be. Standout tracks for me are Safe Distancing (for the great build up and evolving ideas) and Burial Scene (for the wonderful mood it sets up with the piano). The more disappointing tracks to me are Finale and Space Theme.

7/10

I reviewed Nickelback's latest shit because I suck.

Nickelback - Here and Now
Image

Let's see how many times I use the word bland in this review. It could be a neat drinking game.

Nickelback is one of the most hated bands in music right now. Everyone I know hates them with a passion. Even people I consider to have bad taste in music stays away from them like the plague or Superman 64. It's actually cool to hate them nowadays (well some people think that way). If they're hated so much, why are they so popular. Are people listening to them ironically (like I am right now)? They have quite a discography of mediocrity, yet they are successful in the mainstream. Ok. I don't like (most) mainstream artists, but these guys take it to a whole other level of bland, soulless music.

Here and Now is bland. The blandest of bland. Most of the songs aren't even over 4 minutes in length and yet each one feels like a lifetime. A lifetime wasted, withered away doing nothing. What's so bland exactly? Well, everything. The instrumentation sounds like something anybody can recreate easily. They're sound is nothing unique at all. Hell, each song on this album sounds almost exactly the same, repeating song structures every time. Every. Single. Time. Short instrumental intro, verse, chorus, short solo, verse, chorus, verse with light instrumentation (yeah I don't know my terms very well), chorus and maybe, just maybe, a short instrumental outro. But only if you're lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it). There you go, I described every single song for you. Occasionally, the guitars sound a little heavier, but it still sounds bland and every 12 year old with a guitar can replicate it.

And then you have vocals. Oh boy. Chad Kroeger has the voice of an angel. An angel of blandness, that is. He's the best at what he does. He has one of the most soulless voices I've ever heard. I never hear any emotion in any of these songs, and that's another reason they're so bland. An artist can get away with some bad instrumentals if the vocalists voice is amazing and vice-versa, but when they're both terrible and bland, you're doomed to fail. It's not just that I don't like how expressionless his voice is, I'm not a fan of how his voice sounds generally, either. It just sounds annoying to me. I've heard worse, but it's still bad. Bland, I guess you can call it. It also doesn't help that these lyrics are as devoid of emotion and imagination as the voice that spreads it's message, but what are you going to do? It's Chad.

I'd usually write a paragraph about what I liked about the album, but, uh...

Bland Counter: 10. Yeah, I used that word a lot, but it's the perfect way to describe them. They're probably the blandest band on the planet, and that's probably even worse than actually being bad. It's not that they're playing badly, but that everything sounds exactly the same and it's more of a chore to listen to than it is enjoyable. The Chadster should stop composing the same song over and over and over again. I can easily call this album the worst album of the year. I applaud you, Nickelback, for your dedication to continue making awful music. Ugh, why is this review this long? I'm just reviewing this seriously to be ironic, and I don't care all that much about irony.

2/10. Not a 1 because I can kinda see how a human might like this.

While, not exactly "new" anymore, lately I've been a hooked on Kreator - Hordes of Chaos (2009).
Image

Track 2 - Warcurse

There's plenty to enjoy between the stellar studio quality, technical shred solos, aggressive vocals and angry riffs. It's similar to "Enemy of God" (2005) in those regards, albeit slightly less melodic. In fact, I can't decide between the two which is my favorite overall Kreator album. Those preferring a harsher sound will most likely prefer Hordes of the two.

I've always been kind of picky with the thrash metal I listen to, and for some reason, after trying time and time again, I just can't seem to get into "Pleasure to Kill" (1986), as much as what appears to be the majority of their fans. I somewhat understand the appeal, seeing as how it was among their most violently themed albums, but the lyrics sound jumbled most of the time, and the only thing that stands out to me instrumentally are the blast beats. I've read a fair share of criticism regarding the releases from the mid to late 2000's and how becoming more technical somehow makes their songs sound "formulaic". I personally think it's quite the contrary and that it's this exact quality that makes their songs sound more interesting/distinguishable.

I mean, I love Slayer, Sodom, and Anthrax... the "brutal" 80's sound in general, but PTK just doesn't do anything for me. Am I missing something?

I just found a shitload of music to listen to. Via MrSuicideSheep on youtube

Most of the stuff i found from his page is just chill music, but i love it nonetheless. To much to review, i'll just link a few vids that i liked. I'm still looking up artists trying to find more of their music.

Rawtekk - Snowflakes

Mario M - Let Me Out

Sabrepulse

I would like to note that Sabrepulse is a chiptune artist.... kind of
This album right here is free on bandcamp. It mixes chiptune with bass, its pretty sweet.

Do you seriously think we don't know who Sabrepulse is?

i wouldn't doubt if someone in here has listened to just about everything I post on here. Doesn't mean someone hasn't.

I challenge you to find someone on r21freak that hasn't heard of Sabrepulse.

On another note, here's some polish electroacoustics.

Probably wouldn't if I tried. I would assume all of the regular posters have heard of him.
