I've never actually heard as single song of theirs before I downloaded this leak. Why did I download it? Word-of-mouth I guess, I dunno. I like them. They are really really technical and play it very well. I've only listened to it once so far so I can't really make an accurate review of what I thought. I liked it though.

Gonna go ahead and second this recommendation. Just listened through it the other day and it's pretty awesome.

Over the past two weeks, I've been revisiting old albums I spent countless hours headbanging to back in the day, now that metal has been creeping its way back into my regular listening habits again. Particularly noteworthy:

Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane (1995) [melodic black metal]

Their older work (circa 1993-1995 aka pre-Jon Nodveidt's incarceration) was arguably their best. Personally, I thought all three of their full-length releases were great, although Reinkaos (2006) was just too different for people to accept at first, which is understandable. If anyone listens to the industrial group Deathstars (sup Death4Te!), it may be interesting to note that Jon's brother Emil Nodveidt is the guitarist and that Ole Öhman (the drummer) is an original member of Dissection.

Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao (2007) [black metal]

Attila Csihar has always been my favorite of Mayhem's vocalists.

Oh man TEEX, both those songs are awesome.

I recently listened to Megadeth's new album, TH1RT3EN. It was okay I guess. It wasn't very memorable, but with a discography like theirs, it's hard to top the best albums. It was still decent though.

Psychotik brought it to my attention that Ne Obliviscaris released a new preview song from their upcoming 2012 album, which will actually be their first full-length. It's pretty sweet IMO.

Got a couple east coast shows coming up that I'm reserving tickets for:
2/03/12 - Iced Earth & Symphony X
3/03/12 - Children of Bodom

Speaking of COB, does anyone still keep up with their releases? I stopped listening to them regularly by around 2007 because I wasn't impressed by "Are You Dead Yet?" and "Blooddrunk". Is their newer stuff worth checking out?

While this is bumped, it's worth highlighting some thrash I've been getting back into:

Kreator - Dystopia
I highly recommend checking out the rest of the album, "Enemy Of God" (2005).

Sodom - Cannon Fodder
The rest of M16 is solid as well. "I Am The War" and "Marines" are other noteworthy tracks.

- In other news, Sonata Arctica is planning to release a new album by the beginning of Summer 2012.
- Their new DVD "Live In Finland" was released 11/11/11.

- I was just recently introduced to the American melodic death metal band Daath. "The Concealers" (2009) is an awesome album.

They're also playing in Montreal, though I don't like them enough to go see them.

I've been an Iced Earth fan for about 6 years now, so I was hyped when I found out they were playing. Admittedly, I'm a bigger fan of their work from the late 90's/early 2000's. In my opinion, "Horror Show" was and still is their best. I'm bummed about Matt Barlow not being in the band anymore, and Tim Owens was also good on "The Glorious Burden" and "Framing Armageddon", but the new guy isn't bad either.

Symphony X, I still have yet to get into more. I've only heard a couple songs here and there.

Still though, the tickets are only $29 and the revenue isn't too far from me, so it's a worthwhile trip.

Bump. Listening to Agalloch's album Marrow of the Spirit for the first time. So far it's one of the best recent metal albums I've listened to, and normally I'm not even that much into black metal and doom metal. Can't believe I never checked it out earlier.

Hahaha oh man the only COB album I have is Are You Dead Yet, I actually bought the CD after hearing Trashed, Lost & Strungout on the radio. Great LP IMO, but admittedly I haven't checked out their older stuff -- is it really that much better?

I've heard nothing about this Nightwish movie; all I know is that they just came out with their new album Imaginarium, and for the most part, it's received a lot of positive feedback. I hadn't thought too much of it since I stopped following their stuff after 2007. Dark Passion Play only had maybe 2-3 songs I really liked. Apparently, a lot of people agree that now that Annette has been the vocalist long enough that Tuomas was been able to create music that's more suitable for her style, all the while sustaining the older gothic/symphonic elements that made everyone love them to begin with. If it's really worth the hype, I'll consider buying it.

The same thing with Kamelot. I haven't listened to any of their stuff since Ghost Opera. Didn't Kahn leave?

On another note, I just got Dream Theater's 2011 release A Dramatic Turn Of Events. On the whole, I gave it a 7/10. The first half of the album was boring while the 2nd half really shined. The track Outcry had some really noteworthy solos while Beneath The Surface was an especially enjoyable ballad. Overall, it left a better impression on me than Black Clouds & Silver Linings, which I hadn't paid any mind to since my first listen through in 2009.

Apparently Wintersun is coming out with a new album sometime this year; there's no specific release date. Same with Periphery's "Juggernaut"; hopefully they release an instrumental version of it like they did with their self-titled debut. The singer is whiny and terrible but the rest of the band has amazing technical skill.

I enjoyed Imaginaerium, FWIW. Then again, I liked Dark Passion Play too and am in general a fan of their current singer.
