Lots of 24ths - help me rate this

Postby Schlagwerk on Tue Nov 22, 2011 1:35 pm

I'm making this file that has frequent 24th bursts and a few 24th runs. The song is at 156 BPM, so that's 16ths at 234 BPM if I have my math right. There's lots of candles at that rate that I'm cutting out in favor of simpler runs because I think it would be more fun. And because 9Volt told me to

It's ostensibly speedcore so there's a bunch of 16th bursts and small runs in there as well.

I'd like to keep it under wraps for now but here's a screenie:

This is rated as a 14 for now but with the candles I'd imagine it would be higher.

Yeah, definitely go light on candles at that speed. It's kind of hard to tell from one screen, but if the bursts are all that short, 14 is probably an appropriate rating. Check your finished chart against Since 1983 or some other easy 15 to compare and use that as a base.

The patterning of that first purple burst looks like a bitch and a half. How long are the longest 24th streams? What's the total step count of the song, and how long is it?

Looks like a 14 but it would be hard to say without actually playing it.

v MAYBE a hard 14. that's tough.

The longest stream is eight beats, but there's two of 'em real close. It clocks in at 2:06 with 803 steps (says 916 in the editor), 111 jumps. There's a few jumpstreams in there too, forgot to mention.

Here's the streams I'm talking about. They have not been reviewed yet, so it's pretty brutal.

You said this is a speedcore song? Do the stream patterns match some sort of melody, validating the candles, or do they just go to typical speedcore drum buzzing? If it's the latter, definitely simplify those patterns to something requiring less and smoother body movement. 2 measures of 24ths is the equivalent of 3 measures of 16ths, which, at 234 bpm, is pretty nasty for a 14 if the patterns aren't really easy. I'm assuming, since you made this topic, that you're not at the play level to just play this and judge it for yourself?

WHOA ok boy you need to calm down with those patterns. Remember that at this speed, not only are candles difficult, so are changes in body orientation (whether you're facing front-left or front-right). This looks similar to Toho Mathematics, so I'd say 14. But yeah, at this difficulty you probably should limit those changes in body orientation to once every two beats or so, unless you're a BITCH like Arvin

I'm a low-level 12-block player, so unfortunately I can't burn money and time on failing this over and over again D: The whole reason why this is 14+ is because people complained my last pack was too easy, so why not liven it up with a speedcore song? I have no qualms with grinding it down to even an easy 14 as long as it's fun and still difficult on the grand scale.

First of all, step what you want to step. I step songs I can't pass, too, but I do it because I like to and I hope to one day be good enough to play them. I hope you approach stepping hard things with a similar attitude, and not just because other people want to play hard stuff :P I'll attempt to pad this tomorrow, possibly, but no promises, because it hasn't been loading my card lately. Just judging by keyboarding it in the editor, though, 14 seems right. Everything but the 24th bursts is really easy, similar to At Least Speedcore Artists Aren't In It For The Money (which I'd personally call a hard 14). Tweaking the patterns in the 24ths to remove excessive jerky movements will make it much more comfortable to play, but otherwise, the file looks pretty solid.

i haven't looked at this, but keep the candles, there's enough 230-240 with simplified patterns as is. be careful is 240 and the epitome of candle buttrape and it's completely doable

I disagree. Candles at this speed are fine as long as there's a reason for them, but there's none here.

I need help with a chart too, this a 13 or a 14?

Song runs at 240 the whole way -- 1750 steps or something in a bit over 4 minutes. Pretty typical speedcore, mostly blues with a few < 1 measure yellow bursts in spots. Also it actually has crossovers because I'm a gigantic piece of shit so I'm not sure if that actually makes it that much harder. Hardest part is probably right after the purples.

Most of it isn't even a 13. It's just that those few streams that push it to that kind of level. Normally I'd say that anything with streams at 240 is harder than 13, but since the rest is just nowhere near that hard 13 is probably right.
