I like this idea. I'd love to judge/enter for this sometime.

However, I hate the idea of this becoming yet another tournament style thing. I think something like this would work best as one-on-one challenges.

Also having a bank of random songs to use is a good idea. A judge/a few members that are sure they wouldn't enter should probably organize this.

No need for tournaments really.

Agreed 100%. Even with bracket-style elimination, that would be encroaching on the territory of the site competitions. The one-on-one aspect makes this unique.

okeeyyy.

1. Post the song to download!. (Please!! A STEPPABLE Song) (echoes: Steppable song, steppable song)
2. Decide who will competence with that song, until 3 persons in the same battle.
3. Set Date!
4. Stepmakers can edit the AUDIO if they wish. then when they finish, they´ll post their files HERE.
5. Quickly, 3 FTOW helpers judge IMPARTIALLY the files for 2 days max. Judge 1 to 10 pts.

and ready!... Let´s start

i want to strangulate to......... ZIM, mute and revolver! so far!

Haha no, you are insane. I am terrible with points/ratings. However if you were to give me two files blind I would be able to tell you which one I liked more with ease. But yeah best 2/3 for judges seems good with me.

PaTriCK =) wrote:4. Stepmakers can edit the AUDIO if they wish. then when they finish, they´ll post their files HERE.

Again, no. Editing the audio itself is automatically an unfair advantage towards a person depending on how they edit the audio. If you meant something like a cut, then yeah, that's fine. Please be more specific with the types of editing allowed.

Didn't we just go over how these are ONE-ON-ONE challenges?

As for choosing how to hand out songs and stuff, I'm thinking each person planning on entering should be allowed to submit one song into the song pot. Then when a pair of challengers comes forward, the judges could take a random song out of the pot, PM it to them, and then get PMed the files back from both. (As a side note, it would probably be wise to make sure the challengers aren't getting PMed a song to step that one of them submitted). The only problem I'm seeing it how the judges are going to get the files back while still not knowing the simfile author. Perhaps we could involve all 4 FOTW judges, with 3 doing the actual judging, and one handling all the PM work? I think that might be viable.

Then after the winner of the challenge is decided, both files would be posted along with (obviously) the winner of the challenge/any judging notes made in the process.

I'll call the first song for two people to duke it out with. I actually somehow have yet to see someone make a file for it, and it stays within the 2 minute mark without cutting and such(r23ers have feelings too :( )

Passage D - Flashbulb

OK, so I've already voiced my opinion that I like the general idea that Patrick has presented here. It's apparent, however, that this idea needs some serious structuring if anything is going to come of it. I think this could blossom into a bona fide site event, like the Secret Stepfile Santa or Iron Simfile Chef events.

I hereby present to you all a proposed rough draft of rules that could govern this event; I call it...

~ Summer Simfile Madness ~

• The competitive period will run for the duration of summer, starting on a given date (say, Monday June 21st perhaps?)
• Each week until the end of summer, there will be one face-off between two simile artists. (Maybe we can do two face-offs per week if there is enough interest.)
• We will have two pools of participants: People willing to select songs and judge stepchart submissions, and those who wish to compete either by issuing challenges or accepting challenges.
• Those wishing to issue a challenge will post to declare their desired rival; matches will be made according to this on a first come/first served basis.
• Entrants may only issue one challenge and accept one challenge, meaning that any one person could only participate a total of two times. (This ensures a fair chance for everyone to participate.)
• Before the first week of competition, the judges would compile a pool of 8-10 songs that would be used for the duration of the competition. Songs should be under 2:15, reasonably steppable, and not horribly difficult to sync.
• Each pair of entrants should be PM'd with their song file by Monday morning. The entrants must submit their finished charts by midnight on the following Friday. Judges will then have the weekend to review the files and choose a winner.
• Judging should NOT involve a numerical system for obvious reasons. Ideally, there should be an odd number of judges (likely 1 or 3) to avoid a tie on any given week.
• Winners from each week could receive something along the lines of a lovely sig graphic. At the end of the competitive period, we could whip up graphics for all the winning files and release them as a pack.

Comments? Suggestions? If enough people are on board for this, I'd like to approach Scott to make a subforum.

I like where mute is taking this idea.

It would be nice if there was some quality control with the judges though. Competent judges who actually understand the mechanics of a good simfile are important for this not to suck.

Agreed. I'd say that FOTW judges are a shoe-in for nominees, but they've already got their respective duties so I wouldn't expect them to take on this extra burden.

I'd also like to stress the fact that the JUDGE pool and the COMPETITOR pool should not overlap. The reason for this, of course, is that the judges would be the ones responsible for song selections; hence, it would be unfair for them to be aware of the songs they could potentially be stepping. If enough people want to judge and compete though, we could simply shuffle the pools around midway through the event and just have multiple song selections periods take place.

I'm game after I'm done with this file I'm working on.

Heh, yeah that was on purpose. I originally thought "Summer Simfile Showdown" was cool, but then the acronym (SSS) would be the same as Secret Stepfile Santa and we can't have that!
