Here's a brief list of my opinions, crossposted from DGAF:
1. Divisions. I don't like the idea of splitting the tournament into two divisions. FRV was really cool, IMO, because if you wanted to win, you had to be somebody like Jim who had footspeed, stamina, technical skill, FA, the whole shebang. You had to be good at the WHOLE (singles) game. Mad Matt is an amazing stamina/speed player, but he's not the best overall player. Gilbert's an amazing FA player, but he's not the best overall player. See what I'm saying? Besides that, if we split it in two, we KNOW who'd win the 14-19 division. Hell, we pretty well already know the whole top 8. It just wouldn't be as exciting, IMO.
2. Vetoes. I think it's fair to give everybody one veto, because like, yeah, you need to be good at every song in the pack, ideally, but if player A picks one of the few songs he's good at, player B picks one of the many songs he's good at, and the random is player B's worst song out of all of them, player A will win the match even though he's only really better than player B at a couple of songs out of 100 or whatever. If the random is Player B's worst song, it's fair to let player B veto it if he's better at 90% of the songlist than player A. This situation isn't very likely to come up, though, so one veto should be enough. This isn't the strongest of my opinions, though, so I don't really care too much what happens with the veto system.
3. Songs. Rebirth 2's first release was basically garbage. The more recent revision, from what I've played, is definitely an improvement. The tournament is still half a year away, and the pack won't be put together for another couple months, right? If Rebirth 2 gets another revision out by, like, Christmas or whatever, and it's got some good tournament-worthy material in it, I say put it in the pack. I also support Charles's nomination + hurt/heal idea for putting together the pack. A lot of really good stuff has come out since FRV, and a lot more is soon to come (Tachyon Delta, TITS 2 <3, various collaboration packs). Maybe start out with a base songlist similar to what we had at FRV, let people nominate, like, I don't know, 20 new song additions each, add them all together to get a really big list, then hurt/heal down until the list is at a more reasonable length? Or maybe nominate a certain number of songs per difficulty rating? I haven't really thought much about what would be the best way to do it.
Also, if I were making the songlist, I'd put one insanely hard file in (Die In Your Arms Tonight, probably). Why? Well, you only get to pick each song once, right? If you're up against Mad Matt and he picks the one 18 on you, for one thing, that means he's desperate, and for another, if you lose (and you will), that means you're not as fast as you should be. 18s are a part of the game, and if he beats you on it, he's better than you at that part of the game. I don't think one song like that will scare off slower players, because the odds that anyone will ever pick it on them are pretty low, and if Matt picks it on you, just pick grooving L.A. Evolved or something and let it go to random. It's only fair
