[TUTORIALS] How to make Foreground Animations

Postby Jayce on Fri May 25, 2012 2:21 pm

Alrighty so this thing is going to be a swift brush across the main aspects of foreground animation, I've alright typed all 4 tutorials up but won't be making them public until each video is made, I will then update this master post with links to each tutorial on DivinElegy since I don't want to reformat them again for forum purposes.

Tutorial #1 – Getting Started
Topics covered:
- Preparing your simfile
- Structuring your animation
- Basic positioning and wait commands

Tutorial #2 - Common Commands
Topics covered:
- Rotating, Zooming, Transparency
- Tweening
- Actorframes

Tutorial #3 - Animated Sprites
Topics covered:
- Understanding Sprite Files
- Creating Spritesheets
- Animating the Sprite

Tutorial #4 -Text and Variables
Topics covered:
- Understanding Variables
- Setting Text and Variables
- Variable Conditions

If you can't be bothered waiting, try going here for some referencing material, you might not even need another tutorial after the first one.

If you get stuck I can't guarantee that I'll be here to help, but I record a video of myself making the examples from my tutorials without any hiccups so more often than not it would be well worth reviewing what you have done.

Enjoy!

Just curious, how is SM5 with foreground animations? I know it doesn't work with those that were made for OpenITG, but in SM5 is it as simple as changing from xml to lua or is it much more complicated than that (if at all possible?)

To be honest using it within stepmania at all is pretty iffy, in the case of these tutorials they are only for 3.95, ITG and OPENITG. I don't have any knowledge of (or intent on using), SM4 or higher.

More complicated (though it's fairly easy to learn Lua, if not easier than xml).
I'd wait until SM5 is more stable though before trying (it's only alpha at the moment and causing a lot of problems).

Now that the divinelegy website has changed, I can't access any of the tutorials.

Does anyone know a good place for tutorials?
Hi, I'm Kevin. I do things.

GDrive folder of all the packs I've ever released here.

That should be most of what you need.

I'm looking into Lua scripting too, and I just read through that whole tutorial. While it goes over some really useful information, it doesn't actually ever explain how to call Lua through an FGChange, or even really what an FGChange is. As someone learning this pretty much from scratch without 3.95 knowledge, it's useful, but doesn't really explain how to do anything with what I've learned from it.

Are there any guides that explain more of the basics of how to call Lua files and more along those lines?
