Howdy all. Made some updates to the guide for clarification. Also added a new section explaining how to add Matt & Lara's new themes that don't require a proxy.

i cannot get slax to work no matter what i do lol

i have the 6.1.2 iso, and the only usb installer version i can find online, closest i came to getting it to work was without anything but thea ctual slax files on the usb itself, but even then after 15~ seconds it booted into itg like normal

after adding a custom folder with songs etc, it wouldn't boot slax once again, just hang

other times when i get it responding, it would be kernal image wasn't found

send help pls

Try using LiLi USB Creator (http://www.linuxliveusb.com/) and use it to load the Slax ISO on the flash drive. It's my program of preference and it hasn't failed me yet! Use it to write the image file to the flash drive and make sure you have the option checked to format the drive (back it up first just in case). Good luck! And welcome to the site!

Also, how are you supposed to get permission to actually hack the cabinet? I'd assume it would be safer to not say "hack" to the arcade manager (since it can seem scary) but they really don't want people messing with their machines regardless, even if they've been spending lots money on the machine for a long time. There's a machine near me I wanna get upgraded now that the pads are in better condition, but the manager was pretty rude last time.

Looks like a regular bootup to me. Does it just freeze there? I saw the exact same screen when I accidentally crashed the machine at the arcade (lol) trying to load LUA modded songs from USB. Booted up fine from there.

I don't remember it taking very long, only around 10-30 seconds :/ Try a different flash drive if you have one on hand. Maybe that's the issue. If not, maybe you got a bad disc image. Download a different version of the ISO and try it instead.

For the record though your actual link to files on step 1 links to a 404 so I downloaded 6.1.2 from the site itself. Maybe it is the files themselves, I'm not sure, no matter what combination I do, it hangs.

Ah, forgot to update the link after I re-organized some stuff on my FTP last year. Link works now; you'd have found it if you had just gone up a directory though.

Yeah, even with your downloads on the front page, using both files to make a USB with Slax on it does nothing. The screen continues to hang where it does when I posted an image a few posts ago.

Not sure what's up here. The guy who owned the machine before obviously did some modding to it, I wonder if it has to do with the fact that he replaced the original HDD? I'm not really sure.

Replacing the original HDD wouldn't have an impact on what the machine itself actually boots from, since it does so from the BIOS. Maybe try powering down the machine and leaving it turned off for maybe 10 minutes? It's helped with my issues in the past.

The machine had been powered off all day before I tried with this most recent attempt.

It only hangs on that screen with the USB with SLAX inserted, otherwise it goes through the normal boot screen.

I'm not technologically impaired or anything so I don't see why there possibly would be issues in the first place, unless it's related to something the previous owner had done with the machine, or the three USB devices I've tried just all magically were incompatible.

After making the SLAX USB, there's no additional steps I should have to take with the files on the USB itself correct?

Try booting SLAX from USB in another computer and see if it still hangs. If you already tried that, I'm honestly not sure what the issue is... Has any hardware besides the HDD been swapped out?

EDIT: Also try booting from a different flash drive if you haven't already.
