Mute's Guide To Using The Forum's Search Feature

Postby mute on Thu Oct 27, 2011 1:37 pm

Ever found yourself wanting a particular simfile but not sure where to look for it? Well, this guide is here to help you do just that. A little-known tool on many modern internet forums is their "search" feature. You can use this "search" feature to magically conjur up otherwise hidden content. It really works! Let's take an in-depth look at its functionality.

~ HOW IT WORKS ~

You simply type words into the "search box" and it will find instances of those words on the website. The "search box" is located near the top right of every page on the forum.

~ THE SEARCH FUNCTION IN PRACTICE ~

Let's use the following situation as an example:

Ssonik wrote:
mute wrote:Better yet, try Jayce's Welcome to Rainbow. Holy fuck. :lol:

Ok, Do I search for that here? Or is it in a pack?

Ill start looking.

How the heck is this user ever gonna find the simfile that was referred to?! With the magic of the search feature, of course!

Image

Notice how I have typed in "jayce welcome to rainbow." That is because we know that the simfile author's name is "Jayce" and the simfile we're looking for is called "Welcome to Rainbow." Next, we simply click that "search" button and see what turns up...

Image

Sweet merciful Jesus! We've been led directly to a post where this Jayce fellow posts links to all of his simfiles! (Including, but not limited to, the aforementioned "Welcome to Rainbow!")

~ CONCLUSION ~

That's all there is to it, folks. So next time you find yourself fanny flustered and unable to find things on an internet forum, remember that you're just one search away from making all of your dreams come true.

Very informative. Would read again. 10/10

Edit: Search isn't perfect though... it can't find stuff hidden in spoiler tags, which is somewhat common especially in larger packs, but yeah

--> Z- Matrix "Welcome To Rainbow"
--> "search"
--> about 10 hits, out of which only one has a supposed link.
---> link is dead.

I'm all for the joke mute, but do you see why people ask this in the first place?

I think that's an entirely different (and completely legitimate) question you're addressing here

Well it's more of a pathetic attempt to get me that fucking simfile that I've been looking for for months.
But your interpretation makes me look less desperate, so let's go with that.

Why should I link you to the unfunny people thread when you can just search for it yourself using this guide!

Which is why it should be stickied, or made as an announcement that can be seen at the top of every forum.
