mute wrote:Step 1 - Set your StepMania's global offset to -0.012 seconds. This is to ensure that the "Current Second" reading in Edit Mode is an accurate representation of where the sync will be on an r21 or r23 cabinet. This has nothing to do with being able to FA the file on your personal computer setup.

I've been wondering this for a while but never got around to posting it for some reason:

What exactly is happening in Step 2? So you want each beat to land slightly before a wave peak? How do you know how much before the wave peak the beat needs to be?

The attack is starting basically. See how the waveform is thicker after the line in the example? That shows where the sound really starts; the wave peak is just the loudest part of of the sound and usually not where it starts.

How do you know how much before the wave peak the beat needs to be?

For electronic music it's usually pretty easy to see where the beat starts, as given in the example you should notice a sharp contrast in the waveform. For other stuff like rock or trance though it might be a bit tougher to see.

Shift + F11 and F12 while a song is playing will let you view and set the global offset. Alt + Shift + F11 or F12 shifts it in increments of 1 ms.

I could be wrong, but I think this works in all versions of stepmania.

I'm not sure if it worked in 3.9, because I never stepped files when I used 3.9 (and, slightly related, I never used 3.95), but I know it works in all the versions of 4 and 5.
