Sometime in October 2006, an amazing gift was given to the In The Groove community. As a fallen hero uses his last breath to save a comrade in the midst of battle, RoXoR, as In The Groove was brought down by Konami, bestowed upon us r21. With it came infinite potential: infinite songs, infinite stepcharts. The possibilities were mindboggling.
Shockingly, this amazing gift was rarely taken advantage of. Even months after its release, it never truly received the praise it deserved. The most popular songs and stepcharts used on it were horrifying stamina tests or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, simple steps to silly songs. In a word, it was usually seen as no more than just a gimmick.
However, there were some who saw how amazing r21 was. They created great charts to great songs, but mostly just ended up lost in masses of other files. Finding good files required lots of previous knowledge, searching of various boards and sites, and lots of playtesting. There wasn't just a single place someone could go to put some guaranteed good songs on his card.
This is what r21freak wants to change.
Here we have two main sections: the Staff Files and the Member Files. The staff files section consists of stepchart artists who have been selected by the high quality r21 files they have already created. Each staff member has his own forum, and there are links to the r21 files they have created, which are all hosted on this site. Some staff members also have "recommended files" which are files that they have played and think are of excellent quality. They are also hosted on this site. Members are encouraged to make topics in the staff members' forums to talk about their files.
In the member files section, anyone who is registered at r21freak is welcome to post their r21 files. They will receive constructive criticism, and if a staff member thinks the file is of high enough quality, then it can become a "recommended file". If a member makes enough high quality files, then he can become a staff member at this site. If you would like to post a link to your r21-ready files in one of the member forums, be sure to read the stickies before to make sure you are including all the necessary information.
There are other forums that are not meant to just contain links to r21-ready files. ITG/r21 Discussion, Other Music Games, General Discussion, and Site Discussion allow for and contain topics per their descriptions.
However, there is one forum that does not fit into normal categories. The Junkyard is a place where all the trash topics and posts from the rest of the forum are put. Since the site admins have a good sense of humor, we wanted to have a place to preserve topics and posts that, while not appropriate for the main forums, can have a place to be quarantined. Posts and topics that are insulting, pornographic, uncalled for, or otherwise unnecessary are all moved there. While it is not encouraged to create topics or original posts in the Junkyard, since it is a place where things are meant to be put so that they get no more serious responses, it is possible. However, it is always done at the member's own risk.
Don't forget to read the FAQ! It contains the rules here, as well as some great suggestions for places to go around r21freak to get the best possible stepfiles. You wouldn't want to miss out on anything amazing, now would you?
As for my own, personal introduction, I have been smashing arrows to various beats for six years now. I have been creating my own stepfiles for five of those years, and the past two have yielded actually playable ones. I have been a silent member of the DDR and ITG community for a long time, though by the time r21 came out, and I saw how little it was being used, I could stay quiet no longer.
We hope this explains most of the site. Feel free to ask any questions, download and make some great r21 files, and enjoy your stay!
