What age did you start playing dance/music games?

Postby rayword45 on Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:57 pm

I'm not quite sure if I should put this here or in the ITG forum.

Anyways, read the title.

ITG: 10 (Simfiles on StepMania: 9) (Actually playing a lot: 12)
DDR: 4
PIU: 7-8 (Only played it 5-6 times in my life)
GH: 9
RB: 10
Beatmania: 11 (I only played Beatmania 3 times, never IIDX)

19 or 20. I can't remember if it was late 2003 or early 2004, I know I started on proper DDR at the arcade in early 2004 but I did some softpadding before then and it might have been late '03.

I think I played like, Parappa and Gitaroo Man in mid 2003 and hadn't really played any music games prior to that.

IIDX and Pop'n Music were from mid/late 2004 onwards, so 20 for those. GF/DM probably about the same

AST is always an hour later than it should be, so you're constantly running with toast in your mouth.

First played DDR when I was 12, I'm pretty sure. I didn't start playing ITG with any regularity until I was 18 since there were no dedicabs in my area.

Also had played Guitar Hero since I was 15 and Stepmania since I was 14.

Since I was 10.
I played DDR frequently until about 15, and then got into ITG. I played frequently until about 16, and then got into Stepmania. Later I found out they were the same thing so I still frequently play ITG.

IIDX I only got into recently, and even then it;s off and on. I'm just waiting for beat mode to actually work on SM.

PIU I've played as long as DDR, but not as frequently (I'm considering though to get serious in it).

It's not the same, especially considering that unless you buy a special controller with a parallel port interface and such you'll have severe input lag issues trying to simulate IIDX on a computer. If you want to get into IIDX you really need to either live near an arcade machine or buy the games/controller on PS2.

okay?
I'm not looking for perfection, just a basic simulator to get my skills up. I go to the arcade all the time anyway so what's the harm in it?
Also you seem to make it out as if beat mode is terrible on SM. While it's not working for me right now, previous versions worked perfectly fine for me (there was no "lag" apart from the keyboard offset I guess). :?

My first time playing a music game was on my 14th birthday, at my best friend's 14th birthday party  He had DDRMAX2 for PS2, and we played alllll night long. Then the next day, since I had a bunch of birthday money, I went to Best Buy and picked up a copy for myself, with two wireless Pelican glow-in-the-dark soft pads. Maybe it's weird, but the smell of those pads fresh out of the box is one of my favorite.

If that's what you want then that's fine, but it's not playing IIDX any more than keyboard SM is playing ITG.

Just saying, if you're serious about getting into IIDX it's worth getting the official games.

That's a horrible analogy. How does fingers vs fingers = fingers vs feet?

Unless I get a job I can't spend any more money than I should, even if I really, really want to, believe me.

Because playing IIDX on keyboard and on sims is nothing like playing IIDX on the real controller, in the same way that playing ITG on keyboard is nothing like playing ITG on pad. One isn't going to make you better at the other beyond learning how to read the notes to an extent.

Yeah, but it's sure a hell lot closer to it than ITG vs SM.
If it wasn't supposed to replicate IIDX that much how come there's a IIDX theme and noteskin (along with ~2 more iirc that are WIP) to go along with it?

People can make noteskins for whatever they like. Someone made an entire Pop'n Music interface and noteskin for Stepmania approximately forever ago, doesn't mean anyone uses Stepmania as a serious alternative to actual Pop'n Music.

The noteskin was just a side note. I was addressing the theme more.

And just because most people don't use it as an alternative doesn't mean...
1. It's necessarily a bad alternative.
2. You should be discouraged from using it as an alternative.
